I’m ready & so is my boy for another year of shad season. about a month away.
Yep, I let the boat sit with a problem/winterized it for the last 2 months because I really don’t like winter weather, but I am about to get it serviced this coming week just because of shad fishing. I also just ordered a 6ft Okuma Ultra Light Rox Salmon/trout rod, it was 30 bucks, I’ve heard good things about its sensitivity, stiffness and strength for a quality low end/price ultralight. In a few weeks it will get tested by the power house shad and the sensitive lipped herring and then I will know how good it performs for the price.

I go to the Tail race canal but like to explore new areas do any of the other areas within about 2 hours of Charleston get shad runs.

Santee River. Fish up from Arrow Head landing. Wilson’s landing below Lake Moultrie too…
Can’t wait . . .
Wilson Landing is below Marion.

Yeah, I know. Brain fart on my part…
Took my Daughter to the Tail Race last year for her first Shad fishing trip. She had a blast catching them…
Never been to Wilson’s or Arrowhead. i would like to check it out.

Yes, the water level down river from the landing is only 2 feet deep for about 400 yards…

Google Maps. The large round looking wide spot down stream from the landing is where people fish. You can also fish from the bank above the landing. Wear hip boots or waders, and watch out for the sudden drop off, where the limestone bottom stops…

How far up the Ashley do you think one would need to go?
Speaking of alternatives to the Tail Race for shad fishing: I know where Wilson Landing is but not Arrowhead–is it near St. Stephen off SC 45 or US52? And which of those three areas (Tail Race, the Canal near St. Stephen; or the original Santee R. out of Marion) generally has the strongest run of shad?
quote:All depends. The limit in the Tailrace is 10 per person while everywhere is 20.

I prefer the Tail Race. The fish bunch up below the dam since they can’t go any further unless the lock gates are open to let them through. Makes it easy to stay in the fish…
Shad limit clarification - Santee River 20 per person, everywhere else is 10.
