Shad this week?

I have a two part question. First, we will be at Moultrie for the weekend and will head to the tailrace to hit some shad. I heard the bite lasts through may. Should we expect some good shad fishing?

Second, as far as herring, I hear they are picking up. Do they hit the same grubs or should we change up?

And a third question is the Lochs… I have never rode the lochs down. Aprox. how long does that take to do from the lake to the canal and is there a schedule or do you just show up?

Thanks for any help!!

The Shad are still hitting strong. We fished last Wednesday and caught plenty. For the Herring you need to use Sabiki Rigs, the ones that have a small piece of white material tied to the hooks. # 4 or #6 size.

The lock has a scrolling information sign that will inform you if the lock is operating, or not, and contact number to call to access it. Doesn’t take very long to go through…

I don’t think the loch is in operation right now. The best shad action is on the side with strong current and tie up to trees/toss anchor on bank to avoid the chance of loosing an anchor. The closer to the front toward the don’t fish past this point sign is the best, the big willow tree is what I tied to and fished 3 to 8 ft deep where the current ripped and it was great. The herring are toward the middle and small sabiki rigs with white tips worked great, 2 1/8th ounce pink jig chartreuse grub about 1 1/2 inches long and 18 in apart were the best baits. You can catch them till your tired or bored.

Awesome, thanks for the tips… I will post results next week!!

The lock is open for business. We got a pile of herring & a dozen Shad today.

I will be out there Saturday morning weather permitting. I hope the rain they are calling for will shift by a few days and give us a clear weekend… We shall see!! Hope to see ya’ll out there. I will be in a 19’ Key West CC…

I’ve always caught shad with a cast net and I’m looking to catch some for some catfishing. Where can I get these from the land with a cast net( I know it’s more difficult that way as I’ve always done it on a boat in the past ). I live in the Bonneau area and about 20 mins. or so from short stay. Anywhere around this area that is better than others?
