Anybody fish for shad on the fly? Would like to give it a shot this year, but don’t know a thing about it. Can anyone share some advice on flys, line, etc.?
I would go with a small yellow fly, sinking line and as light a rod/line as you can get a hold of. They aren’t real picky fish but, small and light are words to remember.
When people (me included) catch them on spinning gear we use 4 or 6 pound line. Go as light as you can.
shad will fight to death and because of the strong currents associated, i generally use a heavy 6 will a fulll sinking or sink tip line. I also like a 11 foot 7wt when the weather is nasty or I need to get it really deep. i generally tie a “commitment rig”, solid 4-5’ length of 8lb and TWO flies. that is important. Although they will only hit the trailer fly, your hook up will soar with a tandem. I also like to use cajun red line as the dropper (no fancy fluro tippet here) since it is much easier to untangle two diff colored lines. chartreuse is the only color, IMHO. simple crarlie type flies work, as do most creations, small hooks. best of luck

I’ve been catching some shad schooling up in front of my house on the Waccamaw River. Here they seem to like small gold spoons. I’ve actually been using light spoon on my fly rod and working it in the current behind my boat. They are active right now on the top of the water at first daylight. They are also interested in flies with weighted gold or silver flash. I even caught one on a Clouser.
