Shad

Great news…

Are they thick enough right now to make the trip worth it?
Also would I be fine using a fluke type anchor like I use in the ocean?

Fluke anchor is what i use, will be fine. Sometimes you’ll have a bit of trouble getting a grab, the bottom seems to be either sand or hard marl (probably marl). So give yourself extra skidding-distance. It can be tricky if there is a fleet of jon boats out there.

not sure on numbers of em so far but if anything you could make a trip up to scout out the area and find some potential spots you like for when they do come in numbers and before the crowds show up.

Went yesterday afternoon for about an hour. Ended up with two in the boat and two lost. The boat in front of us seemed to be doing better than us but they were just letting the grubs run in the current instead of casting. The shad nets are up from the commercial guys so the run is starting but just not heavy yet.

Where do you guys go to catch shad? Boat landing? Boat or kayak better to use? Thanks Ben

You can use either boat or kayak, it’s a matter of taste. Kayak is a bit of a long paddle if you want to go to the dam (recommended). You put in at the boat landing that’s closest to the Pinopolis Dam (I forget the name of the ramp).

Stop in at the Angler’s bait shop/gas station if you don’t have lures, they’ll show you what to get, but basically just green crappie grubs.

Thanks

99% of people there will be in boats and i got called every name in the book for taking a kayak up there (stupid, brave, idiot, determined, …) at first last year, but i had no problems out of several times fishing there. with a strong even pace it took me about 40 minutes to paddle from the ramp across from gilligans to the dam area. if you take a kayak once you are at the dam if you go to the right side you will want to be close to shore in the slack pockets since the current will get fast once they start running water. if you go to the left the current is moderate and can anchor most anywhere within reason. either way you will want a good anchor to hold steady (i used a 10 pounder). to keep fish i simply chained a stringer to the side to tow back my shad/catfish. on the way back you can also drift around and pick up several more fish. a few times i even put my jigs behind a 3oz weight and caught some trolling while paddling back. not sure when but i wanna make a trip back up and of course ill be taking the yak.

I went last year with a friend in his own boat, right in front of us. We were catching pretty good and right behind me was a tree. Another boat came in behind that tree and I could not see them straight on but could see they were there through the branches and leaves. As I was reeling one in the current took it right in front of their boat, just like everyone else. When it came past them they tangled their line in mine and netted my fish. I heard an “Oh @#@#” and something to the effect of “that is their fish.” They immediately pulled anchor and took off. Meanwhile, my gf, my buddy and his family are laughing like crazy. We thought it was funny. I guess they thought we would get mad.

I don’t think I want any roe, but who knows I thought shrimp and grits just sounded awful until I ate some. Another one I haven’t got up the nerve to try is catfish stew. You can take the man out of the mountains but you can’t take the mountains out of the man.

WOW, you just don’t know what you are missing!! A hot bowl of catfish stew on a cold day hits the spot!!!:sunglasses:

A bad day fishing is much better than a good day at work.

So does a plate of fried crappie. I had a big plate of fried crappie, baked crappie with crab stuffing with hush puppies and french fries Friday night. Then went out and put 30 bundles of brush in the lake, we started at 9:00pm and finished at 5:00am you can’t believe how cold it was, but we beat the wind.

What is on the plate other than shad roe?

Seared squab, sliced rare on endive, and a Madeira sauce with grits.

Dam!!! That looks good

I dont even eat fish but that looks good! ONN the video only plays to 17 seconds then stops, not sure if it is this POS computer at work or what!
