Shad

Heard a rumor the locks at the dam and the fish ladder at St. Stephens are broke. That’s why there are shad already being caught. Has anyone heard this or, better yet, can anyone confirm this?

Looks like they are working on the lock at the Pinopolis Dam…was up there last Friday - don’t know about St. Stephen.

Thanks elgeebee.

Fish lift at St. Stephen is down. Heard work to get it running is scheduled, but may be a month or so before its passing fish

Is there shore access over there or do you have to have a boat

You can sometimes catch shad at Arrowhead landing, need to take a pole that can cast a small jig a good long way though.

You can’t access the Tailrace dam (Pinopolis) by land… at least not very close to it.

Saying “I am offended” is telling everyone else that you cannot control your own emotions, and thus you need everyone else to do it for you.

There is shore access at St. Stephen. I’ve never fished off the hill there but have several friends who have. A good warm day this time of year will line the bank with people. A friend of mine’s father went last week or week before and watch some people catch several. He didn’t do a lot of fishing, just enjoying the day. It’s a good idea to bring a long handle fish net or waders when you go. The bank has about 3 to 4 foot of grass and weeds in the water.

Reliable source said at least a month on both the Lock at Pinopolis and the the Lift at St. Stephen. Lots of fish taken from the bank at St. Stephen. From Moncks Corner, take Highway 52 across the Re diversion canal and hang a right at the first road. Follow the signage to the Striped Bass Hatchery…drive past it and go about 1/2 mile more until you pass under the railroad bridge. Take a right into the parking lot next to the railroad causeway and the canal. Still early, particularly with all this cold weather, but given a few warm days and it will be “on like Donkey Kong” (Si Robertson). See you there! or on the Tail race.
