Do a meet and greet fish off and clean up. At least if I don’t do good on the shad I could feel like I did something.
I doubt the date will lineup, but I’m interested. My son and I always clean up a lawn bag full each trip.
im not 100% ill even be in sc this spring getting assigned to new duty and everything else with that, let alone make it to wilsons for shad, but i think 40 has the best idea of a meet and greet, then clean up afterwards. if i do make it there this year at a random date, ill be sure to bring the lawn bags…not just a couple shopping bags that i had in my truck anyway.

The friends I have that fish for shad remind me of duck hunters. Very loyal to the sport. I’ve got one buddy that goes to Florida every year for them. He won’t eat em just loves catching them.
Got another neighbor that doesn’t like the row, but loves the fish. He calls it his saturday fish. Says it takes all Saturday to eat them picking through the bones. When fried they kind of remind me of a Pin fish. Strong flavored and bony.
I think like several have stated, it’s the thrill of of landing many hard fighting fish on light tackle. And many really love the row, I’m not a fan. I think my favorite row is Dolphin, and then only occasionally scrambled in some eggs.

I love taking Kids after Shad. Easy to catch, and lots of fun with little skill needed to have a great time. I keep the Bucks to freeze for bait, and a couple of the Roes for friends that eat them.
The only way I have ever eaten any, that I liked, was cooked in canning jars in a pressure cooker, that a fellow angler let me try while fishing one day.
Smoked Shad can be tasty.
I’ve always liked them for eating, but yes, the bones are a challenge so that keeps some folks away from wanting to eat them.
My father liked them, and my mother baked them & fried the roe. Very tasty and because they were only available for short periods, we considered them a special treat.
They’re great on light tackle & fly gear too so either way, keep a few or let them go!
I was always under the impression that when released, they usually died. Am I mistaken by this thought? I have seen many floating near dead that others released. I like to keep my limit and use them for cut bait. There were times I limited out in a few minutes and left because I didn’t want to catch and release and end up killing a bunch of fish.

So has anyone caught any yet last year this time it was decent. I have a new smoker built and im ready for the hearing
According to multiple sources most our shad die anyway. We have o e have the longest runs for shad to make to the breeding grounds, like a 100 miles. So after they breed they usually don’t make it back out.
You been yet Cory?
Na I’ve been busy.
Thinking about riding up to the tailrace in the morning to try it out. Want to run the boat anyway, so even if they aren’t there, it won’t be a wasted trip.

I swung by Wilson’s Landing on Saturday afternoon with my kayak and got one shad. I hooked up with a second, but it got off while I struggled to get the net out. Another boat nearby got seven. They’re there, just not very many yet.
As of this morning, the tailrace is tough. Re-Diversion canal bank fishing is picking up. Wilson’s landing still OK, but not a lot of fish.
Shad update anyone?
How about the herring?
