I’ve never done it but I’m sure the kids would love it. Any tricks or baits of the trade? Anywhere in the river or closer to the locks?

Just the see through green curly tail grub, try a double rig… moving water a must

In the Tailrace Canal the best spots are on the right side of the bank, below the Dam. Fishing has been lousy the past two years though.
I started fishing up at Arrowhead Landing last year on the Re-diversion Canal. Don’t have to get there early to get a decent spot and not as crowded.
Double jig rig can be a pain for beginners, and tangles in the landing net are common. I just use a 2’ length of 14# as a shock leader, tied to my 8# main line, and use one 1/8 oz jig head. 2" Curly tail grub in chartreuse green metal flake is what is commonly used.
I find that anchoring tight to the bank, and casting toward the middle works best for me at Arrowhead…but you can also anchor just about anywhere and cast out behind the boat and let your jigs just sit in the current until you get struck.
Take some Sabiki rigs too ( size 4 or 6 ) with 1/2 to 3/4 oz bell sinkers to use for the Herring.

Had wanted to stop by the boat landing Saturday to check on what’s being caught. Plans changed. May get to stop by there Tuesday though.
