Shade for flats boat

Looking for ideas to add some removable shade to my 177 scout. I could buy a bimini for it but don’t want the hardware always mounted to snag nets or stub toes on. Thinking of making something that retracts out from under the poling platform. Anybody got ideas?

Try using a large beach umbrella in a consoal rod holder. Might have to use a longer stem.

This thing is great. My buddy has one and we use it on both of our boats. You can mount it to any rail. We mount it to the grab rail or the steering wheel. If it isn’t too windy we don’t tie it down, but it comes with 4 tie down straps.

The best part is that it isn’t huge. Big enough to give you shade but doesn’t crowd the boat. Perfect for your 17’.

This is what I do. Make sure to put something on the end of it so it doesn’t mess up the bottom of the boat resting/moving on it. I also add a couple of bungees to keep it down in the rod holder. I’ve even idled around with it up…

We also do the same with umbrella in rod holder. The Tommy Bahama brand beach umbrella they sell at Costco is very lightweight - for the rod holder and to transport - and good quality with wind flap. Probably sold elsewhere, that’s just where I got it. I added rail-mount rod holders on the grab rail on each side of windshield - 2 pack of stainless steel is often on sale at West Marine for $50. We also use a bungee to make sure it doesn’t blow away.

Here’s a member selling the option I noted:
