shaft length on trolling motor

I have a 21 ft sea pro bay boat and it currently has a foot pedal controlled trolling motor. I am trying to figure out what the shaft length on a tiller controlled one would need to be. I found a good deal(real good) from a buddy on one with a 48 in shaft. I have measured and looked and stood in various places. I have about come to the conclusion that depending on how I am fishing will determine the length i want the shaft to be. The 48 in will work when i am standing on the tip of the bow skip casting under docks, but i think it will be too short if i am cruising the grass line and want to stand back a bit on the casting deck. I see they have extendable handles made by minkota, do they work? I have both trolling motors at my house and I don’t want to put his on or pay someone to do it and then it be too short. Also, he wants to know what I am doing with it. Any input, experiences or ideas will be greatly appreciated.
