I know this is the striper forum, but it seems to be more the Lake Murray forum. So I ask this.
I used to do a lot of bream and shell cracker fishing in the lowcountry, but have not tried up here. I am thinking about giving it a try this weekend, and since Lake Murray is so big I figure the approach is different than the rice fields of the lowcountry I am use to. I here to setup in 4’-12’ of water with a rocky bottom. I know of a good rock structure in the cove just north of Jakes, but not any other places beside the dam wall. Anyone got any tips of a rocky shallow area to hunt for?
I really wouldnt say rocky is best but more of a shell bottom is best in my opinion. I havent bream fished in yrs but used to do real well on the north side of shull from koon to the tip. Never started the big motor and start working toward the end. We never anchored unless we found a biomass.
We used to do this religiously every weekend. We would only keep BIG ones and many times limited on lb bream. We never float fished. We either used baby night crawlers or the biggest red worms we could find. We would go through about 4-6 cups per person. We would use a #2-4 gold aberdeen hook with about a 1/8oz split shot 18" above and would cast and bounce it back slowly like working a carokina rigged worm…
also up the irmo side from the dam, i think its the 2nd or 3rd cove there is some sort of camp in the back. There is a long jetty like point back there. It’s great for bream.
Forgot to mention. Rig the worms like a plastic. Thread it on the hook and leave a long tail. This is why we used to go through so many worms. You will get a ton of tail pullers. But the big ones will take it all. Once your tail is gone put a new one on.
