Shallow water jugbellies

Went out for the high tide this afternoon and the fish didn’t disappoint. Tailers were extra lazy today and willing to have their picture taken. Today was a good mix of species on the flats, from fish to birds to mammals. Back to the dock by noon just in time for the craziness to begin.

Darn nice pictures!

I was looking for those jug bellies on Friday but didn’t see any on the flat I visited. I did get there a little late - about an hour after high tide.

I really like the close ups especially the Wood Stork.

How close did you get to take those pics? What camera and lens are you using?

I won’t bother asking the spot where you took them.:smiley:

I get as close as the fish will allow me! Those were taken probably 50’ away standing on the polling platform.

Awesome! I have an old Canon T1i w/ a Sigma 70 - 300 ish. I don’t get near the crisp/sharp focus that you have.

Maybe it’s time for me to upgrade.

Fast speeds and lots of great sunlight make for sharper images.

Great pics!!!

Nice. Yet another flood tide passes with no Optiker on the flats… sigh. Gonna change my screen name to Too Busy…Oh yeah…

I have to admit that it makes me feel a little better about not getting on the water when I see folks that live down there not fishing either.

What is in the second pic? Almost looks like a otter or a rat… :face_with_head_bandage:

Sailfish did you take these pics this weekend? I was out walking the flats Saturday morning and saw them tailing as well. Hooked my first red in the grass on a fly it was addicting. I went again Sunday too. Each day I saw 3 reds tailing went 1-6 on getting them to eat. I am a novice fly guy so I am learning. My question for you is do you see them more active on the rise in the flats/grass? I am able to find them as the water pushes in and they slow and disappear as it slacks and begins to drop. Is it better to go to where the water is draining out as it falls?

Great pics! My brother in law has a really nice camera and ridiculous lens. What are you shooting with?

I think they were otters; but I didn’t get a great look at them. I could just tell they were brown and fury and NOT fish. There were two of them following each other around.

I’m far from being an expert. There are those that could tell you a lot better than me. That being said, I go a lot. I mean, a really lot. I think I’ve been 25ish times this year, maybe more. I almost would rather waste an entire day of inshore fishing just to get the chance to get up on the flat to search for the reds for that hour. Its by far my favorite inshore fishing to do. My thinking is that if there’s water on the flat, there’s potential for the reds to be there. And it doesn’t have to be a lot of water either. I’ve seen them with their backs out of the water swimming around in 5-6" plenty of t

Beautiful pictures as always. I could be wrong but I think those critters are minks.
