Long story short, got the boat stuck in shallow water as the tide dropped out. I turned to motor the boat back in the channel. As I was running the motor semi hard to get out, I was raising the trim and tilt, but my T&T is a little funky so its very slow. The kotor was all the way down and I didn’t get it up high enough in time. I turned around to see it owe muddy water/ silt and cut it off. Got out out pushed. Once back in the channel I tried and tried but couldnt get it cranked. At first it was getting no power, now it kinda blips or darts and that the only sound. What could have happened?
Motor is an '02 Mercury 125 saltwater
Put it back in neutral and try again.

Not trying to call you stupid at all. Just speaking from experience. I would guess it has something to do with the neutral safety switch or the kill switch or key switch since you said you cut it off. I guess it could have overheated, but I wouldthink you’ve got an alarm for that, so I would be skeptical about overheating.

Since you say it wasn’t getting any power at first, sounds like an electrical connection… right? Perhaps something is going on with your starter and it’s just a coincidence that it happened when you beached it.
BTW I don’t think Tigerfin was making any statement about you being stupid.

Was that you behind Dewees taking shortcut from Capers Inlet.
The above post was meant as a joke. Although I don’t take kindly to a climpsin fan callin me Dumb (:D)
But seriously I played with the killswitch and all that. And blew the pee pipe on the water trying to unclog it and got some out.
It almost does sound like a starter or something that got jarred loose, because u can hear it trying to start but not catching. It kinda just farts and stops
Nope I was in the wando by 526, that (**() creeks shallower than I though!
Almost sounds like it’s behaving the way it can if the prop is lodged stuck on something, although that’s a long shot. Sounds like the starter just can’t get it going— if you mean “u can hear it trying to start but not catching”. I assume you mean the starter is attempting to turn but seems to be either jammed, malfunctioning, or not getting correct voltage.
Have you tried using a freshly charged battery?
Is this motor small enough to attempt to pull-start it?

I would be happy to take a look at it for you to see if I could help you figure it out, but you might want to take it somewhere else, I am also a Clemson Fan…
Maybe you can find a Shamecock grad that might know a little more than the art of delivering pizza to help…
All kidding aside, PM me is you would like me to look at it… I am not a mechanic, but I know enough to be dangerous…

Start troubleshooting. Check your battery voltage, then move down the line towards the starter. I have had bad experiences with Mercs and starters. Take the cowl off and see if the pawl on the starter is jumping up to engage the flywheel when you turn the keyswitch. All said, we need more info about what’s happening.

Careful Tigerfin, he isn’t a Clemson fan, so don’t use big words…lol:sunglasses:

check your battery voltage. have had a problem with a weak battery not wanting to kick the starter up enough until I cut the switch
so that both batteries are working then motor would start
Actually I replaced to boat battery 2 months ago, and the motor acts an on board charger…
As a gamecocks fan, anything over 3 syllables and I’m done, LOL just kidding.
Tigerfin-ill try that tomorrow in the daylight and reporr back
Even if the pawl is jumping up and making contact, it still won’t turn the motor over unless the battery has enough juice. The first 2 things I would do is get the battery checked out and make sure it is charged atleast 80%. Then remove the battery cables, and sand down everything and reattach tight. If the motor still doesn’t turn over, then I would start tracing back to the start like Tiger said. Probably just not enough juice to turn it, or a corroded, and/or lose battery cable connection.

take the spark plugs out
try to turn the flywheel by hand
if it spins smoothly, you have an electrical issue
if not, its mechanical, and could be lowerunit or powerhead
can you spin the prop when its in neutral
YaKman72, did you get it figured out yet?

No I didn’t yet. I will take a look at it tomorrow and report back. Hopefully it doesn’t resort to me having to call a clemturd fan for help but I will.
