I am planning to do some shark fishing this afternoon on folly, and was wondering whether I should fish the pier, or go down to either end of folly. I have a PENN Spinfisher V 5500 with 50b braid. Im not planning on catching anything huge, just something to have some fun with. I know there are tons of sharpnose around the pier, that are in the 2-3 foot range, but ideally id like to get into something a little larger. I will have fresh cut mullet for bait.
I could be wrong, but I don’t think you’re allowed to target shark at Folly Pier. http://www.follybeach.com/shark-fishing-ban-off-folly-pier
I catch plenty of small shark in the Folly River. Quit fishing there because that’s all I caught. Made me uncomfortable in my kayak.
I think you are correct. It’s also against the law on Tybee Island and Hilton Head. It scares off the tourist crowds to see sharks pulled in where they swim. The sharks are always there of course, but what people from Kansas don’t know won’t hurt them, and it keeps them spending money.
So if you want to catch a shark, don’t say so, say you are fishing for bull reds, and if you “accidentally” catch one, that’s OK Release it, don’t keep it.
