Shark Hole

About 20 yrs. ago I was directed to the hole by a IOP guide. Have mastered the shark catch since. There is no shark hole n. of IOP.
Let alone, 80 ft. deep.

Make ready for a full outgoing tide at the breach of inlet between deewee and caper islands. Arrive with good anchor for strong tide in 20 ft. of water, fresh mullet, shrimp, or menhaden in that order. Med. tackle to catch whiting or small blue for live bait. Bait tank not ness. Just bait as you catch. Have Lg. rig for shark. Min. 80 lb. steel 60 in. leader on Min. 60 lb. Mono. With Heavy action rod and reel. Use 10/0 stainless hook to hook bait through lips or nostrils. Hurt him a little. 3oz. - 8 oz. pyramid weight depending on tide.
Chumming will help immediately. May. - Aug. Daytime tide.
You can catch several species of varied size, but hold on cause you might get a 6 ft. spinner who will use all your 60.lb line up unless you release anchor and chase him. Good luck.

Been to that hole many a time and caught shark. Its there and it is deep. just got to know how to find it.

yea i cut my teeth in that hole it exists… id say a solid 60-80feet on the sounder… its prime shark fishing and has been shark hole for about 3 generations that i am aware of…

Well dadgum, post the cords. Yep, NUMBERS. I’ve never seen 80 ft. west of the ICW between IOP and Georgetown until you get to the deep end of Moultrie. Enlighten us. I’ll go this week just to be a believer.

I was there years ago with the brother in law, I believe he called it the dynamite hole. It isn’t on the ICW, but on a large river running inland off the ICW. I remember the hole was on the creek/river where there was a bend and another creek/river tying into it.

somewhat correct… its not on the icw… but its not on a river either… it does run off the icw… a marsh does dump into the area on outgoing tide which of course makes it productive on falling tide as it is pulling bait to the hole. it has a shelf that holds 15-20ft till the big drop. the drop is quick.

Last week I helped a young couple beached on capers. A run to the store. Wherein the young man was pointing out to me where he was told it was. The same as I 20 yrs. later. Irony of the post time, but I idled around the area to show him it wasn’t and explained the process of erosion in a sandy and muddy basin. Could’ve been long ago, Just like the bombing range off hy. 27 in Fla. But those craters too have filled via erosion. I went on to show him that inbetween IOP and Capers, the deepest was 32ft. right at Deewee inlet. The place told was upcreek adjacent from Deewee inlet 200 yds on N. side of creek. I went on to tell him that it’s not really funny to have a man spend the time and money on a wasted search at someone else’s delight!! I know you guys are locals but that doesn’t affect me. I enjoy helping others catch and eat. And we need a whole lot of sharks eaten. That’s my interest here on the subject.
“SOME CHAINS AIN’T MADE FOR JERKIN’”

“herein the young man was pointing out to me where he was told it was” he was told but never been… i can tell you where new york is but it may not be the one your looking for… every state has one.

it is what it is man. idk what to tell you. i myself fished it for 2 years straight in a 21ft scout s/s with a local who’s family has owned a house on iop for 3 generations… their house is actually in the hugo/iop book… it is also a landmark house on the iop island… we have since started fishing the jetties more but on rough days when you need to just get out shark hole gets the job done.

i agree erosion happens as well as silt/setament back feeding… unless things have changed since sept/oct it is still the same… sat and watch a few tarpon get hoked up.

Thus the issue. If we encourage the novices to catch and eat their adult shark, it will have a positive impact on adult reds in the surf. Which in return will produce more breeders inshore! And they are happy critters as well with their fine catch. I will post recipes soon. That’s the key deal. Teach em’ how to prepeare them proper and they’ll be back for more. A lot I hope… Hope Ya’ll understand the long term anti-legislative initiative!!! But Legal. You can put em’ on maggots in the basin, but let’s put em’ on adults.

lol catch and release…

look at what they did to the cobia population in edisto…
look at the tuna population
heck redfish in the south would be on the extinct list if we didnt have laws.

dont think its just commercial fishermen being harvesters of death.

Fish at the inlets. I don’t know of an 80’ shark hole but I know a 60’ shark hole. It’s very real and between a barrier island and the ICW. There’s so many sharks around here I wonder some times if you even need to bother fishing the hole. I did many times last year and didn’t catch anything over 4’ which you could best at any inlet.

This thread has a strong fishy smell to it…

It’s there Fred and not too far of a trip for anyone in MTP. It actually MIGHT be 70’ feet but I can only confidently say its 60’. I fished it as far back as 15 years ago and last year also and it’s always been the deepest inshore water I know of besides parts of the harbor.

I’m confused. Is someone saying there isn’t a shark hole, where it is, in the wrong location?

Some gamefish laws are good. Some are not. Experimental at best. I believe Shark conservation methods in the S.E. are completely backwards and the results are evident to me, clearly, with an over population of them and declining populations of other species. From snappers, flounders, bass, trout and reds, to mullet, coastal species have and are declining at a rate that no way gets it’s heaviest pressure from recreational fishing. Commercial is heavier but sharks do the deed more than all combined. But the Feds. don’t mind using us as the Atlantic pupping ground.
I recon we should encourage the harvesting of rays as well. They eat pretty good too.

I always thought fish populations declined from increased fishing pressure, pollution, development, loss of habitat, things like that. hadn’t really thought sharks were responsible. You think it’s a liberal media conspiracy of some sort?

x2, like toppy’s back or something.

Maybe it’s to protect our shores from amphibious assault ??
Study ALL the critters they have the answer.
Our legislators nor DC do. And Biologist running around with stun guns only see the tip of the iceberg on relevant issues.
Diligent time on the water shows us what’s really going on over years, and this is a played out experiment in shark protection.

As for the “hole” I still haven’t seen any numbers posted.

If you need numbers posted to find shark hole you may want to take up golf.
