shark on the beach

Caught this dude Saturday at Pawley’s in the surf. Got an idea of what it is, but looking for ID confirmation. Hook removed and released quickly.

Bullshark

Yep, bull shark.

I’m going to have to disagree and say finetooth and a good sized one at that. The dorsal is the wrong size and shape, along with body thickness being too slender. Also if you look real close in the second picture you can see the interdorsal ridge between the dorsal and tail which puts this shark in the requiem family. The bull shark is not a requiem shark. Thought maybe silky at first but the dorsal is pointed and not rounded. Congrats on a nice toothy.

Yep, no way that’s a bull shark.

Next time you come in, come heavy, or not at all…

Juvenile Bull Shark or possibly a Smalltail Shark… Most likely a bull

I feel like bigcountry is right on this one with finetooth. I had also had thoughts of sandbar shark, but seems more likely finetooth given their common status, tendency to be near shore, behavior, etc. I’m going to see if I have any more pics, but I don’t think I have any others that will be more useful for ID.

Donde esta Barbawang? He usually has the answers as to species.

After comparing to some pics from last year, I also vote finetooth

not a bull, and I’ve never heard of a smalltail. I’m not the shark guy though, he’s out this week. officemate and I think either blacknose or finetooth, they’re the only 2 small coastals that could be. He doesn’t think the coloration is right for finetooth, and a sandbar would have a much more defined interdorsal ridge.

Sandbar sharks have an almost cartoonishly big dorsal compared to other sharks it’s size. I have heard of a smalltail but they have a rounded dorsal and don’t seem to be very common around here. Also, just going off ofthe dorsal a bblacknose has a slightly rounded dorsal tip and this shark has a dorsal tip that comes to a sharp point. Just my thoughts on it though.

Baby Great White? or Megalodon?

I think barbawang was on to something…blacknose. Seen lots of them with that wavy caudal edge.

I’d have guessed a bull from overall shape and being caught nearshore. But there seem to be others with more info.

Used to think a limited number of sharks came into shallow water. Then there was Mary Lee, and lady attacked by tiger in shallow water in islands; id based on a tooth left in her buttocks.
