Shark Report

Went to Garden City last night to yak some baits out and try my luck on some sharks. No monsters, only five or six Atlantic Sharpnose that were all around 3 to 4ft long. Kayaked baits out about 300 yards. All sharks caught on giant pieces of cut mullet. My farthest (~400yards) rods bait clicker started screaming around 3A.M. and I fought what Im pretty sure was the biggest shark Ive ever hooked for maybe 3min and the the line just went slack and I reeled my rig in still intact, no idea how that happened. Kept one Sharpnose and grilled him tonight will lemon juice and lemon pepper and Im now a big fan of shark steaks. There were also a bunch of crabs that looked like blue crabs but had spots on them in the surf, are these good bait? There was one in the sharks stomach but Im thinking more along the lines of big redfish.

i’ll be at ocean lakes campground this weekend, bringing my yak hoping to do the same thing you just reported! i’ve never had mine in the ocean after dark though, so i’m a little unsure about that. i’m hoping to be able to get a friend his first opportunity to fight a shark!

You may be aware, but in case you’re not: shark fishing is illegal in Horry County, so don’t put the bait out from around Ocean Lakes. You’ll need to hit the Georgetown County part of Garden City, or farther South.

Yea, I didn’t learn until after posting, that it is illegal. I did some research on here and found a few threads about it. I’m camping with a big group of people, so it might be possible for a few of the guys to slip away and head towards Georgetown. Thanks for looking out!

Having a full moon and clear skies makes paddling out a little more peaceful and not as nerve racking as pitch black haha
