Shark rig?

Whats a good shark rig for sharks about 3-4 feet long and maybe 30 lbs at the most?

It depends on what kind of sharks you’re going for. Most of the time I use 90 lb wire as a leader when I’m targeting big sharks from 4- 10 feet. I’ll scale down the wire size if I’m going for anything smaller like bonnetheads. I like to have a 3 ft wire leader and a thick (40-50+lb for smaller sharks snd 100+lb for big stuff) mono (a couple feet longer than what size sharks you’re hoping to catch) as the skin of a shark can be very rough and play hell on a mainline if it comes in contact with the shark. As for hooks, I like both J and Circle hooks however I normally got for a 7/0- 10/0 J hook for big sharks.

It is possible to catch sharks on mono, just remember what teeth are there for, cutting through stuff (like mono).

RiverMonster, I probably have 3 dozen shark rig’s already set up. Some to catch 2 ft. shark’s other’s to catch the big one. Next time you come over I’ll give you some and show you how to make them.

Rapchizzle,
Thanks dude! And when you say 100lb+ mono do you mean you crimp that to the wire and then to your main line?
Stuck,
Ok that would be great!

I prefer to use the haywire twist to connect one end of the wire to the hook and the other end to the swivel. I then use the uni knot to tie the 100 lb mono to the swivel. If I’m using a big conventional rod, I’ll use a double overhand loop knot at the end of the 100 lb leader and attach it to the snap swivel on my mainline. If I’m using a spinning rod, I’ll use the uni-to-uni know to connect the leader to my mainline.

If you have any questions, you can pm me and I’ll help you out best I can. I go shark fishing about once a week in the Spring and Summer down here and have developed techniques that I have found to work best for me.

If your fishing bonnet heads, I usually fish an egg sinker, swivel, two feet of 30-35 lb leader, 4-5 size circle hook, and use menhaden. Not an expert at this, but I don’t think it’s a good time of year to be fishing for them.

And cam–do they leave in the winter?

Most sharks migrate to the ocean to seek warmer water during the winter. If you fish in 50 plus feet of water you will catch more than you can imagine. But it will be very hard to catch them inshore. Good Luck!
