Shark Takes Trout

I was wade fishing for trout and had several on my stringer. We decided to move to a different location. When I lifted my stringer out of the water and into the boat, I realized that while I was fishing a shark had eaten a trout off my stringer and I never knew it. That’s a little unsettling.

I’ve done a good bit of flounder gigging while wading. We used to carry them on a stringer and just drag them behind…until one night out by Bird Key I had a shark of unknown variety begin to feast on my meager stringer of flounder. I cut the line and he took the whole stringer away.

Now I carry a backpack…

I wade fish a couple spots and use a burlap sack rather than a stringer. The fish stay alive but are out of view. Not sure how it would work against a shark but it definitely keeps the large birds away. I got a feeling these birds have learned that fisherman often catch free lunch.

Another time years ago we were surf fishing in FL and catching tons of baby shark (do do do do do). We were standing in chest deep water with bait in our pockets… We finally got the picture when a remora tried to latch onto my side that it was time to get out of the water.

We would pull a 12 volt battery on a block of Styrofoam behind us 12V light mounded on a piece of PVC. Gig a flounder out it on a stringer, stick the sharp stringer into the foam. Gigged 83 flounder one night on Cape Romaine. Great Times!!

People will forget what you said…
People will forget what you did…
But people will never forget how you made them feel.
