Do you really need a steel leader for these species? If so, what length? Do you attach the hook directly to the leader? Going out to the 60 this weekend and would prefer not to have hooks bitten off and the 6’ mono leader bit/cut. Thanks.

Agreed, but you can also use mono for sharks, just use a heavier leader like 60lb, 80lb or 100lb and with the right size hook (especially hooked in the corner of the mouth) you can land sharks just fine.
When I am specifically targeting sharks I will tie my own wire leaders with malin wire in the coffee color using haywire twists that are only about 12"-18" long so I can leader them with the mono leader and if I can remove the hook with the dehooker boat side or if they are too large then just cut em off with.
Ok, thanks. I have 40lb main line on my TLDs and Penns with a 40lb leader attached to the snap swivel. Lost quite a few last time out. They would turn South just short of the boat abd snap. I assume that it was teeth cutting the line. I’ll try the 80lb leader though. I have quite a bit of it on the boat for leaders and such.

AJ’s are alright to eat, many will say not at all. There are definitely others out there that are better. If you are going to keep any for the table make sure they are smaller as the larger ones tend to have worms. I have had em grilled and smoked with seasoning, not that bad.
Plenty of discussion on this topic Tex, (AJs on the table). Let me just say from experience, they are chock FULL of worms. I have read that they typically have worms in the tail section or near the head. The three that I opened up had them from head to tail, Buttloads of them. In the trash can they went. If I could have removed a few worms, I would have cooked them but there were way too many worms to begin picking them out. Big worms too!
Fishing on the bottom is like having sex with the lights turned off. It feels good… but I wanna see it.
Lights On!
Thanks Trip and Smily. And everyone else as well. We are gonna hit the nearshore this weekend if the weather holds. Maybe even overnight on the 60. I’m gonna keep an eye on the weather though. This storm front is supposed to end by friday evening and 2-4’s on Saturday and Sunday.
