sharks in the cooper

Had duty last night and the evenings get pretty boring… Threw out some chunked mullet and caught sharks all night! Biggest we had was around 5ft. We did hook something that we had absolutely no chance of stopping… , it felt like i hooked a slow moving jetski… Took about 100yds of line then It ended up breaking 50 lb braid… Bull shark maybe?! That was the first time I tried fishing there so I have no idea whats down there. Anybody ever hear of big sharks near the old naval base in north Charleston?

Lol, I hope your boss man doesn’t see this!

Yes plenty of big sharks in the rivers. Bull is probably a good guess.

His boss was probably fishing with him.

Navy fish on their boats too, even on the aircraft carriers.

Your description of the run sounds like a Giant Black Drum. Have a few friends that have caught them in the Cooper the size of small jet ski’s.
Kind of like trying to hold back a bull dozer with a rope, it’s not going anywhere fast but your not stopping it either!

I hung a small gator (I think) at Bushy Park, right down the river from you. Behaved the same way— moved slowly, but no stopping it. I was on a light inshore rod so it wouldn’t take a lot of reptile to overpower the rod I was using.

There’s a good chance you snagged a gator. If you didn’t pierce him with the hook, and it was just snagged on him (the tough hide) then he wouldn’t have been in a hurry.

had a 6’ Bull between me and the bank gigging the south end of Clouter creek (across from the CG)last week. We also saw a few bonnet heads along the lower cooper. I hope you released that juvenile Bull…got to be 54" from nose to fork
