Sheapshead on Artificial

My 4 year old boy was casting a chartreuse grub with 1/2 ounce jig head for trout/flounder/redfish and caught a nice sheapshead. We were not near any pilings just casting to the bank. Fish was about 10lbs anyone ever heard of this?

Awesome! No, I’ve never heard of that.

That fog rolling in off your bow looks pretty bad.

I also have never heard of a sheep on an artificial . Good on ya, young fella !

The closest thing to artificial, I’ve caught a sheephead in a cast net, but I dont think this is the same thing.
I think he has a “top-this” story that will last some time.
Congrats kiddo!

Oh, and great photoshop work! Love the white mountains.

I read an article in Florida Sportman that say occasionally they hit artificials. A pic was included with a sheephead that had a paddle tail jighead combo hanging out of its mouth. I don’t think they will be replacing the famous paper clip rig though.

Unusual, but you were apparently fishing right in front of two icebergs :sunglasses:

if he can catch sheep on artificials then please do not let him use live bait…he might catch them all!
seriously though, I’ve not heard of that…

Never…what an accomplishment. Make sure he knows  And, you need to blow that pic up to 8x10 and hang it in a prominent place in the house!

I caught one in Murrells Inlet about 8 years ago on a white grup with a paddle tail in a deep hole. This is the only other one I’ve ever heard of caught on artificial.

I have not heard of Sheeps on artificials, nor have I seen icebergs in SC. Now I have seen pictures of both.

Wow, a rare SC iceberg, and a sheepshead on a lure? Thats double lucky!
But seriously that is awesome! I too saw that article that hairball saw, I wad a bit skeptical anybody can attach a jig head into the fishes mouth for a quick pic. But that makes a believer out of me! I second tjat you need to hang that one up

caught one last year on a green curly tail grub with a red jig head doing the same thing…casting toward bank, no structure, etc…7lber

I believe the key is to scream your bored, start slinging arties and drink a juice box. If they don’t bite, scream you want to go home NOW and they will hit. Half the time, it works every time!

Way to school them young squire, and way to hold your own fish! BRAVO!

very nice, never on artificial, but once over an oyster rake on live shrimp under a cork. 8lbs

Hopefully you’ll instill just what an accomplishment your little man made!

We used to catch the occasional sheepshead throwing yozuri plugs against the jetties for blues and spanish. Seems that all of them that hit artificials are pretty grown. Caught one sight fishing in the grass on a gulp shrimp last year. Its pretty rare but it happens. Nice catch!

good thing no one can find out where to catch sheephead on a jig.

Not questioning you but I don’t know you or how long you have been fishing…sure it wasn’t a drum. The only artificial I have ever seen a sheep eat was a fly and that’s tough to do!!! No matter what it was, I’m glad your son caught it!!!

rookiefly–is the pic not loading for you? He put one up–it’s a grown sheepshead not a drum. A 10 lber is quite an accomplishment for a seasoned fisherman, so cool your 4 year old caught it. Save that picture!

And about artificials–I caught one on a topwater of all things at the jetties–he missed the hooks and snagged himself in the side. Pretty random!

Caught one in NC jigging a metal plug off a dock for weakfish. Around 9#'s. Every one I’ve heard of on artificials have been big ones. Remind him of that story when he’s old enough to understand so he can brag to his fishing buddies.
