Sheephead parasite

here is something that is a first for me. I have filleted hundreds of Sheeps and have never seen anything like this. They looked like small shells in the meat.

I don’t know what species those are, but here’s what they could be:

Parasites
The sheepshead is parasitized by a variety of organisms including ciliates, nematodes, trematodes, and isopods, none of which are known to pose a significant threat to populations of this fish.

Gross… but funny.

“Gun’s don’t kill people, it’s mostly the Bullets”

Since BarbedWang is busy with his own larva, I’ll chime in.

My sources (I. de Buron) tell me it appears to be cestode (flatworm) larvae. The dark color and hard outer covering is the fishes immune response to the parasite, basically encapsulating it.

She makes the caveat that she wishes she had the specimen for total confirmation, but she feels good about the ID.

Sells - anytime you get weird parasites (or fish you handle do), freeze them and save them for future ID and Dr. de Buron will thank you.

I have them frozen, I contacted Amy Dukes, but she never got back to me. If they want them come to my store
