Sheeps and Trout 12-5-12

I was able to convince my neighbor to try for some Sheepshead and Trout with me today. This was my second attempt at these elusive suckers the first attempt was with a friend about 15 years ago unsucessful I must add. We picked up some fiddlers, mud minnows and sand fleas and headed for the Wando. We arrived at a spot i’ve always thought should have fish based on everything I have read and learned from CF. We started to fish with about two hours left on the incomming tide. We rigged up dropped bait and was not disappointed within the first five minutes both my neighbor and I had both landed fish. The first fish was mine and was a keeper at that my neighbors was just short. We fished the rest of the incomming and about two hours of the outgoing tide and ended up with ten total. I caught eight and my neighbor caught two. Two of mine were keepers and one of his so we got 3 total for the day. Also it seems that they were biting both fiddlers and fleas equaly.

The bite slowed so we set off in search of some trout. I had recently caught a few trout so I headed for the same general area and again we were not disappointed. We only caught seven total five for me and two for my neighbor. All caught on trout tricks nothin wanted a mud minnow today. All released they were small fish 13" but we had a great time it’s nice to go out and target fish and catch what you went in search of.

Thanks everyone for your posts and tips on CF I doubt I would have been so successful with the Sheeps without your help.

Congrats! Sheeps are a lot of fun to catch that’s for sure…

Mikeyloo, I picked up fiddlers at Haddrells and the sand fleas were frozen and from the Duncans stop and shop in GooseCreek.

corey1031, They were very good that was dinner last night.

Thanks, DDS2. I have used fiddlers from Haddrell’s several times with no luck. I love Haddrell’s but I think maybe the local sheeps don’t like Florida fiddlers in much the same way that I prefer local oysters over Florida ( or anywhere else ) oysters. I read about sand fleas on PierandSurf. They seem to be the best bait for summertime pompano in the surf. We ain’t got no sand fleas on Folly.

No problem Mikeyloo the sheeps didn’t seem to care where the fiddlers were from yesterday.

Good job! I am still in search of my first keeper sheepshad. I have caught a few but all shorties. Did you get the sand fleas from Duncans on Redbank rd Goose Creek?

Try using oysters or clams during the winter for sheeps. I have had much better luck with them instead of using fiddlers. Seem to catch the larger fish with them. Went out 2 weeks ago caught a 8.5 lb, 7.0lb, and a 6.0 lb all on oysters. Caught 10 total, kept the 3 bigger ones. Caught in 10 to 12 feet.
