Sheeps Fishing?

Can somebody give me a little crash course on catching some sheepshead. I’ve caught a few but may actually target them this weekend. I don’t get to see my dad that often and I’m taking him fishing Friday and Saturday. I’m good with tackle and bait just need some techniques.
Do tides matter? Fish on the bottom vs suspending your bait? Docks vs rocks?

Thank you in advanced!

Do a search of this forum. I had the same questions as you and found the answers by searching. LOTS of great advice has already been posted. Good luck!

Fish on the bottom, dock pilings or around bridge pilings. Around rocks will work too. Tides dont matter so much, just find moving water.

True, tides don’t matter much, but if you are fishing structure (docks, pilings, etc.) I have found that low tide works better (limited water column).
Do a search and you will find that it requires a very sensitive touch to recognize. You will need a lot of bait - fiddler crabs. Good luck, I love fishing for sheeps.

Drop to bottom, crank up once from bottom. Wait, if you pull up a whole crab, go somewhere else. You wanna be casting the least amount possible, fish vertically. Bring more crabs than you think youll need. Live shrimp are great too, scrape a little growth for natural “chum”

Thanks for the replies. I caught a pretty nice one the other day on live shrimp fishing on the bottom next to a rock wall. Previous to that me and my grandfather always tied up to old dead live oak trees and fished with fiddler crabs.

I use a 1/0 Mosquito hook for smaller sheeps and a 2/0 for the larger one. Carolina rig or a a weight on top of the hook works as well. Vertical fishing

Let your weight hit the bottom and count to 5… SLOWLY lift your rod. If you meet resistance, keep easing up, DO NOT SET THE HOOK. If it is a fish and not the rocks, it will hook itself as you are lifting. You will lose a lot of fiddlers, but you will catch a lot of fish.
I prefer the jetties, mid- to- late November

The more hooks the more chances and less need to rebait often.
