Sheeps from the bank

Went out looking for sheeps today andstumbled across some in tidal creeks u der bridges, had to use a bobber to keep the bait where i wanted it and not laying on the bottom. I found that when hey pull the bobber under it would ne to early to set hook. And i could only catch them when i saw the bobber returning to top. And then i snagged 2 in the eye. Nonkeepers but plenty if fun. Looking fir advise in getting that timing right. As i caught my first sheep head today.

The trick to catching sheephead is to set the hook just before they bite.

A camera pointed down at the hook would help, but that’s just cheating.

Interesting tactic. I’ve never tried using a cork but I guess anything is possible.

I’ve had some luck catching them while targeting other fish. I wondered if it was because I could see the bite before they felt any real resistance.

I use a 6’6" ugly stick medium action rod with 20ld test with 50 ld mono leader. Carolina rig with 3/8 to 1/2 ounce egg sinker and a 1/0 mustad live bait hook with great success. Some use smaller hooks but these work great for me.
The trick is paying attention. Watch the rod tip and your line. The bite is LITE. The largest sheep I ever caught (8 lds) never moved the rod tip but my line started moving against the current. It takes trial and error to get the feel but if you try you’ll learn what to look and feel for.

At what point do you attempt to set the hook, PWRhead?

Watch your rod tip, sometimes they pull just slightly, sometimes it’s a slight tap.
either way you’ll learn after a good amount of fiddlers missing what to look for. The uglystick I like to use has the strength for this fight but a light enough tip so you can see the hit. You still need to set hook hard and fast to sink it in there jaw so watch your sinker when it slings past you on a miss, just sayin
