BTW…these Coasties are not your average Joes weilding sporting rifles. These guys are well trained and an “accidental” shooting is pretty unlikely.

More fishy less talky
Roger. They have to do their jobs, and if they are ordered to point guns at everyone, then that’s what they have to do unless the orders are changed. The brass making the protocols should be the ones to answer on it in that case, and maybe some orders need some changing–and maybe not. I don’t know if those orders exist or if any actual pointing even happened because I’m not a witness. So, I’m speaking in hypotheticals. The kids were an example (a real one, though). My point is that if we’re not pointing hot machine guns at everyone boarding planes and ships, or even people visiting the White House, then I don’t see the logic in the requirement to point them at fishermen and sailors because they got 200 feet from a cruise ship. The people boarding the same ship are as big of a potential threat as the people in the boats. So, I favor checking the boats the same way we check the boarders. Check the boats, keep the gun at the ready, but don’t point it at people unless you have to.

Accidents are less likely with more training, but no one is beyond an accidental discharge–especially on a boat. When anyone thinks they are beyond firearms accidents, that’s when they are the mot dangerous.

P.S. Just so you’ll know, no, I don’t think the Coasties are as stupid as that DEA agent, but they are all human. I hope you know that I’m not anti-CG or anti-military at all. I’m very pro-military and pro-CG. I have had two friends killed in military accidents, though. One was a Seal, and another an Airborne Ranger. The military is not beyond accidents.

Don’t get me wrong Gotchacovered I do agree with a lot you’re saying, but realistically these kids are not sailing into the middle of a fire fight either. I personally have never heard of a boater being shot “accidentally” by a Coastie on patrol and I don’t believe you will ever hear that. Maybe if the CG was notified the sailing team will be in that area on a particular day it would eleviate this show of action by them. Just a thought.

I find this interesting, because I’ve strayed over the Parris Island line in the Broad River a few times, maybe 3 times in the last couple of years. This always brings the patrol boat over for a visit, but they have never pointed a weapon at us. The man on the .50 keeps it trained in our direction, with the barrel up, and the men with the M16s also keeps the barrels up. They are firm, polite and professional.
The same in the Savannah River at Georgia Ports. I go through there often and am always approached by the CG or homeland security. They always have their weapons up and ready, but they have never pointed them directly at us. They are also firm, polite and professional. They ask our intentions, we tell them we intend to be drinking cold beer in Beaufort by sunset, and they let us pass through without trouble. Sometimes they check our ID, sometimes not.
I’ve never felt threatened or harassed by them, myself. In all my encounters I’ve never seen them actually point a weapon at anyone. Can’t blame them for being careful, or for following orders.

Perfect! That’s exactly what I like to see, and that’s what I’m talking about. That’s exactly what they should be doing. No need to point guns directly at you.
That’s also why I say it’s a moot point if no guns were actually pointed at the people in question.
