Sheepshead and circle hooks

Would anybody be willing to share any advice on rigs using circle hooks to catch Sheepshead? Hook size, leader length, and egg weight recommendations would be great. I am in the novice stages of sheepshead fishing and have had a lot of fun in the past 2 years catching them. Thanks!!

That depends on where you are going to be targeting the fish. Some inshore areas that do not have much current will allow you to get away with just a circle hook and enough split shot to sink your crab. Deeper areas with more current will merit heavier tackle. I use a carolina rig with 10 to 12 inches of 50 lb mono leader with a #2 gamakatsu circle hook. The strenghth of the current will determine how big of a egg sinker you need to use. Also, put a 15 to 20 degree offset in your hook with a pair of pliars. PM me if you have any questions. GOOD LUCK!

Not to many people know how to snell their own hooks. Thats always a sign of some serious rigging experience.

Or a simple youtube search...

I use 20 pd power pro braid on my rods and run the line all the way to a #2 circle hook. no need for leader with braid. also makes it easier to feel fish. with one or two bigger sized split shots. and a fiddler crab. simple, cheap, and easy.

I tried it back in March. They didn’t seem to hook up as well so I went back to one of the many J-hooks I had purchased before the ban. If I see a fish police coming to check me, oops, I just broke off, let me tie on another circle hook.

Screw this regulation, I won’t be in compliance.

Semperfish, why the bead on top of the weight?

It makes it prettier!

Fish are too valuable to be caught only once.

ha, stretch, you can support them without the beads

Because it’s my rig and that’s what I wanted.

My Granddad always put a bead between the knot and the lead weight because he said it kept the knot from getting as beat up. Don’t know if that is true but he always caught fish and Granddads are always right aren’t they?

None of these complained Saturday.

Nobody likes a show-off.

I can’t take credit for all of these. I was fishing with Punisher 21, so half are his. They were all caught on the same type of rig…with two beads. One to keep weight from sliding onto swivel and the other for symmetry and a little more flash.
