I live in the upstate area of South Carolina on Lake Secession in Abbeville County. I am very new to saltwater fishing and planning to come to Charleston this month to try my luck on Sheepshead. Lake Secession has freshwater mussels and freshwater clams,I’m wondering if they’d make good bait for Sheepshead. Anybody ever tried them or think they’d work for Sheepshead bait?
Hey Cambo I live in Anderson and fish for sheepheads in Charleston every chance I get. Never thought about the freshwater mussels but if you try it let me know how it works.
You need to check out the “bait wrap system” sold by Mossy Head Bait Company. www.wrapfishingsystem.com/home.html
I bought it last year and it works really well

BadBob I’ll let you know if the freshwater mussels and clams work. I was planning on going next weekend but the weather forecast looks like rain, perhaps the next weekend.
FLY ; I WAS SOMEWHAT SKEPTICAL MYSELF AT FIRST ( 2 YRS AGO ). I TRIED THEM AT OI AND KILLED THE SHEEP AND B-DRUM ALONG THE DOCKS AND BRIDGE… BUT BETTER YET HERE IN THE SWEET WATER THEY WORK ON THE CATS USING OYSTERS SHRIMP BLOODY LIVER AND COARSE GROUND CHUM;;; IFFIN YOU PULL THE TRIGGER POST UP HOW YOU DO !!!
BE SURE TO WATCH THE VIDEOS MOSSY PUTS OUT ON HOW TO LOAD THEM AND THE DIFFERENT SIZES AVAIL… GOOD LUCK
Picked up some surgilast tubular elastic dressing retainer at drug store. 25 yds. was probably less than $10. Just knot one end and use the hook to close the other. Alas, I have yet to use it, but seems like the same deal they are selling as kit. Need a big basting injector to make loading it easy. Let ya’ll know if I ever get a good weather/work window.

If you know someone in the medical field the syringes that the use for feeding tubes work great. I bought the kit from Mossy Head and then had a friend in the medical field get me a couple of the syringes and they are very similar. Now I can load multiple syringes and have them in different areas of the boat.

the grocery store is a good place to start if you don’t have a seafood supplier nearby ; i usually try to stock up when the season is closed and freeze in pt size zips…
You usually can find some around any of the salt water boat landings. You only need a few. I usually shuck about 3 oysters and load them into the syringe and that last about all day. You only inject about 1/3 to 1/4 of an average size oyster into the bag at a time and can catch multiple fish from one full bag. So far the most that I have caught from one loaded bag is three fish (and missed a few also)
