So Thursday was my birthday and it seemed like most people were responsible and were working…but the weather was looking all too good. So what’s a birthday boy to do? Not let that stop me, that’s what I did.
Called up Haddrell’s only to find they were out of fiddlers…hmmm, maybe I’ll go find some myself…maybe I’ll go chase some reds…maybe both! So that’s what I did. Got to the ramp around 630 and put in to a beautiful quiet weekday morning. I was the only one there and it was nice for sure. Proceeded to the redfish low tide grounds and upon arrival saw several jugbellies wallowing around in water that couldn’t have been more than 10" or so. It was a beautiful sight. I casted out the only bait I had, some day old blue crab chunks and tried out the hottest new artifical bait. They still were not very aggresive for me. I had one pick up a bait and run thirty feet with it only to spit it out when he felt the drag start to strain him. An hour went by and no hookups. Anyways, after that lackluster performance, I was done with the reds for the day. I can catch them anytime, today is a day about sheepshead afterall!
So off to the ultra top secret sheepshead hole of mine that no one knows about. Yes, I take people there but they are blindfolded first. Bonzo had to sign a contract saying that Willi would be given to me if he ever spilled the beans about where this spot was…its that serious folks. Realizing I had no fiddlers, I stopped and picked up some on a nearby flat of mine with easy access and got my feet dirty…didn’t mind it though. Something about being back in that pluff mud that makes me feel like I’m living right. Feels right, smells right, tastes right! Twenty minutes and had about 60/70 fiddlers in my Lowes sponsored bucket. Off we go! At the catching grounds, the bite was slow at first and had to move around a little bit, but eventually found the sweet spot and starting boating fish. 70 fiddlers turned into a dozen sheepshead. I kept one for dinner later on and th
How do you catch fiddlers can never seem to catch them?
Find them on a flat on a warm sunny day. Walk around a lot like a crazy person staring at the ground! Most of their holes aren’t all that deep. When they duck in the holes stick your finger in the mud and block them and pull them out.
If there is dead marsh grass laying on the ground, pick it up and look under. There are usually a bunch hiding there too. Anything laying flat on the ground, there are typically fiddlers hiding up underneath. Finding them is the first challenge.
Hey 23sailfish, happy late bday! Thanks for your your tips on my sheepshead post! I can see that your advise came from experience! Nice fish! Thanks again. My 3 yr old helped catch our fiddlers, great experience from the start to the fish on the plate#128512;
