I haven’t fished for sheepshead yet this year. Anyone doing any good on them yet?
Also does anyone know the regulations in SC for children and life jackets? IE what age are they required to be on and what age or size requires a child’s jacket vs an adult?
I’ve got my little bro’s coming into town and plan to spend all next week on the water.
Thanks!

South Carolina law requires all children under 12 years of age to wear a U.S. Coast Guard?approved Type I, II, III, or V PFD while on board a Class A (less than 16 feet long) vessel. The life jacket must be fastened and of the proper size for the child.
I caught some under the Ravenel bridge a couple weeks ago.

So on my 26’ boat they aren’t required to wear them at all times? I’m going to pick up a few jr sized vests just in case but I like to know the law.

Look under resources on here and check boating rules and also regulations. That way you get it straight from DNR book.

12 and under have to wear it at all times… not sure on size but I’d assume it just has to fit them, might as well buy one that fits in case you gotta use it. They also have to be readily accessible i.e not in a plastic

See Heartofthesun’s response above. He is correct, kids do not have to wear them if the boat is at least 16’
I don’t care what the law states and how big the boat is, any one younger than 14 WILL wear a suitable PFD on my boats! I doesn’t take but a milli second for some thing to happen to an unexperanced boater!!
Tried for sheeps the other day on Folly river and struck out, but I only gave it an hour or two in some productive areas.
Regarding the life jackets, I agree with boatpoor. Put the jackets on them, even if you have a 26’. We don’t want to see your kids on the news.
Moral judgment under girds the entire structure of laws and is necessary for the rational structure of any significant statute. The idea that our laws can stand independent of moral foundation is senseless.----- Albert Mohler.
I agree with Redfish. Myself and my 16 yo son wear ours whenever the boat is in motion. It does not take any time for everything to go bad in a hurry. For example, three weeks ago we decided to head out to a reef for some, coincidently enough - Sheepshead. NOAA said 2 ft seas out to 20 miles. We were about 2 miles offshore and suddenly the seas were at least 5 feet and Cresting! Needless to say, it was not a good situation. We got turned the first chance I had and literally surfed back in on the waves. I was at least thankful we had our pfds on, and as I always think back on it, there was no time or opportunity to put them on in the situation. The boat was heaving too much, and I could not stop, nor take my hands off the helm to put on one.
But, back on the sheepshead, I have caught some inshore at the bridges and other structure in the HH area. The wind has made it tough to stay put though and effectively feel their bite.

I caught a dozen three weeks ago. Only three were big enough. Personally think 12 inchers at 1.5 lbs should be legal fish. I would have been able to keep 8 then. I was fishing around jetties. No boat needed. These are 2.8 to 3.5lbs.
Unfortunately a 1.5lb sheepshead will only yeild about .5lbs of meat.
