I was just curious if it possible to catch a sheepshead on a fly? If you have caught one, what fly were you using?
Possible yes…hooked two in the past on a chartreuse shrimp pattern.
Its been discussed on here in the past.
My experience they don’t chase a bait…get their attention and let it lie…set after they pick it up!
Not trying to start anything but… what would be the point? Fly fishing and sheepshead is kind a mismatch to me. I also hear the some people troll with a fly rod.
I’m open to the fine points of the sport though, if someone wants to “splain”.
TyOneon, sheeps will tail in the grass sometimes.

Now I am all amped up about wanting a black drum in the grass! But… sheepshead?
Never seen a blackie on a flat but sheeps, yessir.
Pillage and plunder with a 9wt and a fist full of clousers.

They really like the flats with the scattered mud pockets…will work the edges and tail very aggressively.
The flats I have seen them on before hold sheeps on a regular basis.
Have seen way more sheeps in the grass than black drum over the years.
I believe your story but, I will not repeat your story until I see one myself or see the picture(s). Likewise, I don’t want you to tell my story until you have proof. Even though two other guys were there, I only have a story.
Hopefully, we can get on some black and white fish on the fly real soon.
I actually like them better than reds.
I have seen both on the flats around Savannah many times. I have never had any interest from sheepshead and have caught only a hand full of blacks.
The blacks will sometimes eat a dark fly. I have had success with black clousers, dark brown Hamilton spoon fly, and a fly called the butt ugly.
Good luck!
so far this year I have only seen one tail and it was a sheep…

I’ll play nice.
I’m thinking the dark clouser might be good for both of those black and white fish. I’ve seen the Texas coast folks add a bit of black bunny fur as a tail.
I blew off my hunt for black drum today and went for the red drum. Glad I did. Not because the fishing was good (though it was) but, I ran into a couple guys that gave me some first hand experience concerning the hunt for stripped fish on the fly. Good to meet you boys.
I probably should have grabbed this fish by the lip with a metal lip grabber thing and posed for a picture with him but… I think I will stick with the water release.
I’ve been on a flat before with all sheeps. Every tail pop was a sheep. Frustrating as all hell casting to that which can’t be caught OTF. It was a bit pointless and a lesson in flats choice. I thought I had hit the red motherload…no dice. Just about 20 sheeps killin a couple acres of shallow stuff on a high tide.

Uh I gotta raise the BS flag here… they CAN be caught OTF… it ain’t easy at all BUT it IS possible…

Well Id love to find some black drum tailing around here thats for (**() sure.It was like a parking lot sunday night where i was. Mostly cripple stick throwers with no flats etiquette. Only saw a couple, no shots one was because I decided not to chase a fish to keep distance between some a-holes. But thats how it goes on the weekend up the dub.

heres one i caught at the dock on the supreme hair shrimp.
Very nice…blind or sight casting?
The two I hooked on the flat took off like a scalded dog quite reminiscent of a bonefish hookup!
