Sheepshead over a nearshore reef

Never tried catching them nearshore before…is the technique basically the same as if fishing near bridge pilings just with bigger tackle to account for deeper drop in the moving water? How do you rig for this? Tips and tricks appreciated…

Yes it is basically the same. You may need some additional weight to reach the bottom and to account for the current. I was using 4oz a couple weeks ago, when inshore I stretch it to use 1/2 - 1 oz. The rig is the same, for me, a carolina rig.

Get a reef anchor…or you may be donating your regular anchor to the reef structure.

How far offshore is the “nearshore” reef?

You can see it from the jetties…

Isn’t it underwater?

Good one DF:smiley:LMAO:smiley::smiley::smiley: He gotcha on that one Cape [:0]

You can catch a lot of small Black Sea bass on the Nearshore, and some other kinds of fish. But I’ve not found sheepshead there.

Reefs can be great for sheephead if you can get away from the bsb.
