Sheepshead Question

Has anyone every had any luck fishing for sheepshead from shore? I know how to from bridge/dock/pier where you can fish a vertical line but the place I want to try is a jetty that I will have to fish from the rocks. Any suggestions will be appreciated.

Get a long pole with 30 lb mono, a one oz sinker and hook. Reach out and drop your bait along the rocks. It can be very productive as hardy anyone ever fishes those areas.

My dad used to use a very long bamboo pole to fish the rocks, no reel, like giant bream fishing.

I have done it several times over the years, last week in fact, with much success. Depending on where I am, I usually fish with about 12 inches of 30 lb leader and typically use only 1 split shot.

When I fish from rocks I either bring my fishing vest or stick a pack of hooks and split shot in my back pocket. Attach pliers via cord to a belt loop. Jam your dip net (if you have one, I usually don’t) in between some rocks. If I’m fishing fiddlers, I take a bottle, cut the top off, run a string around each side and wear them around my neck.

Fishing like this is dangerous. If you have a penchant for drinking while fishing, this is probably not something you want to do. Be sure of your footing and pay constant attention to your surroundings. I only say this because I have the scars to prove it. That, and I finally quit drinking a few years ago!

Your line absolutely does not have to be straight up and down to catch sheephead. You can let your line drift with the current but keep as much slack out if it as possible. Bring plenty extra hooks and weight.

I’d be happy to go with…

Narcosis

I’ve never done it but I’ve definitely been outfished by someone walking rock groins while i was in a boat.

If the wind is blowing, a single split shot may not be enough. The one oz may be too much but sheeps don’t really care about the sinker. And like you Larry, a friends dad used to kill em off the Savannah jetties with a long cane pole. He had a coffee can strung around his neck with china backs.

A long calcutta pole and I always heard if you ain’t hung up you’re fishing in the wrong place.

Mom’s suppose to get me some copies of photo’s from Dad when he was stationed in Hunter Army Airfield in Savannah. He caught some monsters shore fishing the jetties around tybee. Mid 60’s. I’ve often wanted to try some of the jetties around Edisto Beach.

Let us all know how you do!!
