My vote is yes. Needs to be one. Size and limit.

Fritz and Stretch both hit it on the head, no use in keeping an 8" fish for a quarter lb filet for one taco … seen it happen …
… when people call for regulating a fishery that no one on this board will convincingly say is in trouble.
Part of the myriad regulations we enjoy today stem from the fact some fisheries weren’t regulated until they were convincingly in trouble. It’s like refusing to buy new trailer tires until one of the old ones explodes …
my vote: size limit, 5 per person, but for crying out loud, let us use j-hooks! … i remember last year some guy and his brother posted a picture with 40 sheep on a dock. a good number of them were small. when everyone jumped on him he tried to assure everyone that there were a bunch of people that were going to eat them… i’d love to see 2 guys sit there and clean/fillet 40 sheepshead. and even if they could, i’d love to see the quality of the fillets at the end. sadly, i think the biggest problem of all fish species are international (and definitely some national) commercial fisheries (not charters). regulating recreational fisheries is just a tiny dent in the problem. i’m not saying any local fisheries but i know up north there used to be a lot more and a lot bigger fish (stripers, summer flounder, weakfish, blue claws, etc). i’ll say that i think SC has the best conservation i’ve ever seen and minus some pathetic laws/regulations that i know weren’t their decisions (sheepshead with a circle hook) i’m pretty comfortable and confident in the SCDNR (and no I don’t work for them nor know any SCDNR folks)
Size and restrictons need to be put in place.
I know at least 3 other guys that will flat out tell you catching sheeps on circle hooks is no problem at all…

bonzo, that’s great, but that wasn’t the point i was trying to make on the previous post. i’ve hooked several on the circle hooks but miss the way of setting a j-hook sharply and feel them explode… different thrill to me. i’d rather have the rest of the posts focused on the topic though just for curiousity of others thoughts on whether a limit should be put in place as well. please don’t think i’m trying to be a smart@$$ by saying so and definitely open to PMs on any techniques you’ve learned through using the circles… not asking for spots. thanks.
shamrock, i think i understand what you’re saying and i agree. hopefully j hooks will be legit again soon if sheeps are broken out of the s/g complex… i’ve never come close to a red snapper while sheepshead fishing, as i don’t fish for them offshore.

Originally posted by RedfischWhy would we bring the same drama on sheepshead that we have on bsb and red smapper? All three being from the snapper family and all reef bearing fish are nearly impossible to take a count of. All snapper swim in schools, if there are no snapper species on a structure chances are this structure is over pressured and they have moved to the next structure(just like fishing pilings if they aint there they aint there). sheepshead being a snapper species can spawn at the age of 2 years. these eggs will not be as plentiful and as durable as that of a 4 year old snappers eggs. Soo if there were a size limit youd want a maximum not a minimum that would be irrelivent to the conservation of these fish. its all about what you can fillet. and the only real way to save the snapper like species and our economy out of the shtter is to start drilling off the east coast. The gulf is an excellent example of this. dats my 2 cents
redfisch, your facts are crooked, and your spelling leads me almost to distraction.
#1: sheepshead are porgies (sparids- as are pinfish), BSB are true sea bass (serranids), and snappers are another family completely (lutjanids). they are all part of the south atlantic snapper/grouper management complex.
#2: all snappers do not spawn at age 2.
#3: what does “reef bearing” mean? demersal, structure-oriented species are among the easiest to survey in order to estimate population size.
#4: "these eggs will not be as plentiful and as durable as that of a 4 year old snappers
Sorry next time ill spell check and sight my sources next time barbedWang. Last time i checked we were just talkin fishin. Anddd the gulf is overflowing with hungry fish, i was down there last summer in venice and you dont even have to set the hook for those sheeps, not to mention the size. why start conflict my brotha? if you dont like it just forget what you read and move on and if you do share. but a grown man like you shouldnt need lecturing.

This post is gonna go on forever. Capt Fritz, sorry that I was a little hard on you. I guess we would not need more regs if everyone did the right thing. I dont agree with keeping small fish either, I have a friend who belives if a fish is big enough to get the hook hes big enough for the pot.
fish today work tomorrow

chickhawk26 is dead on - “if people would do the right thing.” I agree with the size (12"-14") and creel limit as well. I would just hate to endure the overreaction that would follow when the regulatory groups find out that the recreational fishermen are suggesting a restriction that is not already in practice. Just my $0.02.

Like Shamrock, i recently saw a couple picture taken by 2 fisherman of 54 sheepshead taken on the Georgetown jetties! The vast majority would have weighed less than a pound or so, and should have been thrown back! These fish were caught by someone who goes very often and keeps everything he catches!! So i am all for a size limitand tighter catch limits! It is people like this that cause these type of measures to have to be taken!! It is a sad thing that they just want to be able to say “look at all the fish i caught”!! But, when they are gone they will be the first to ask why they are not there anymore!! Unfortunantly there is no cure for not having any common sense!!
12" minimum…keep current creel at 20
