Sheepshead Size Limits

Should there be one? Been seeing lots of small fish being kept this summer. I know its legal to keep any size fish but it is also legal to ride your bike down highway 17 if you want to. Anyone know who to talk to over at DNR to get the ball rolling on having something done to protect these fish?

Why? You want more goverment control. Sounds like you are just trying to protect your wallet. I could be wrong, but enough restrictions have be handed to us lately and I for one dont think we need anymore.

fish today work tomorrow

Why? Are sheephead overfished? is there a problem catching them? If not, leave it alone. If someone goes over their limit, then write them a ticket. Otherwise, leave it alone dude.

I feel with all the other restrictions out there that Sheepshead are paying the price for some of it. People will kill the smallest of fish just for “one taco”. It’s called game management, deer hunters do it, why can’t fisherman? Not trying to protect my wallet at all, I rarely target Sheepshead on charters and when I do I release some of the bigger fish as well as ALL of the small ones.
Regulations on fish species are a necessity in our society today, that is if you want any of your kids or grandkids to catch fish when they are older.

I understand DNR is working on a suite of alternatives whcih they will present at the September 9th meeting of the marine advisory committee at Fort Johnson. Georgia and Florida both have minimum sizes and a reduced creel.

that sure is a pissy attitude!

would like to see a 14" minimum and a creel reduction to 10 per person…

hope it happens.

but, there is no such thing as pro-action when it comes to our fisheries…

You are right. I should have been nicer. It just makes me mad when people call for regulating a fishery that no one on this board will convincingly say is in trouble.

it has to be in trouble to be looked into?

why get to that point.

You are right. We don’t want a fishery to get into trouble. However, if you allow some people to have their way, all recreational anglers will be catch and release only. YES, I HAVE A PROBLEM WITH THAT. I am all for protecting a fishery that has shown a scientific reduction in fish. I want the fishery healthy to pass on to my sons and theirs. I just don’t want someone calling DNR because they think someone kept too many fish of a small size WHEN THEY ARE WITHIN THEIR RIGHT TO DO SO.

If we wait until “they” decide action is needed, the pendulum may well swing way too far the other way. If we, as recreational anglers, push to limit the size and creel limits on a species, we may have more control of the outcome than if we wait for the SAFMC, NMFS or anyone else to institute a limit.

reasonable people would think that. However, the people in charge of making the rules don't want you and me to keep any fish. PERIOD. Look at the BSB fishery and the draconian measures they have taken to "protect" a fishery where there is not a problem as proof of what will come of this course of reasoning.

Why would we bring the same drama on sheepshead that we have on bsb and red smapper? All three being from the snapper family and all reef bearing fish are nearly impossible to take a count of. All snapper swim in schools, if there are no snapper species on a structure chances are this structure is over pressured and they have moved to the next structure(just like fishing pilings if they aint there they aint there). sheepshead being a snapper species can spawn at the age of 2 years. these eggs will not be as plentiful and as durable as that of a 4 year old snappers eggs. Soo if there were a size limit youd want a maximum not a minimum that would be irrelivent to the conservation of these fish. its all about what you can fillet. and the only real way to save the snapper like species and our economy out of the shtter is to start drilling off the east coast. The gulf is an excellent example of this. dats my 2 cents
