went to the 526 bridge where it goes over the ashley. fished 1:0 circle hooks and fiddler crabs with a quarter ounce split shot about a foot above the hook. was under the bridge from 2-6:30. didn’t land one fish. my friend and i missed about five fish each, with one breaking me off. i’m not really sure if i was doing something wrong or if that’s just sheepshead fishing.
Anything that pulls drag, right?
you fishing a 1/0 or a #1 hook? I think the #1 is smaller and that’s what I usually fish with, #1 or #2…also, J hook or circle hook? when sheeps were in the snapper/grouper series we were forced to use circles, and I got used to it, but now you can fish J hooks for them…

I use strong 1/0 hooks. I also buy nicer quality and super sharp hooks for sheepshead.
Light weight is fine as long as you’re fishing straight up and down. If the current pulls your line sideways, use more weight.
Missing some bites and getting broken off are a part of sheepshead fishing. Set your hook often (anytime you feel a nibble or see the line move) and you’ll land one eventually.
I use 20 lb. mono leader and haven’t had too many issues with break offs. Have your drag set kind of tight and as soon as you hook the fish pull him away from the structure. You can then let him make a run or two and fight him a minute so you don’t pull the hook, just get him away from the structure first.
You have to set the hook just before they bite…
Seriously though, a #1 or #2 (not a 1/0 or 2/0) “J” hook or Kahle hook works good.

I use #2 hooks and don’t feel bad I miss about 50% of my bites too. I open the hooks up just a little and it seems to help me. Just set the hook every time you think it could be a bite and bring tons of bait.
