Sheepshead

I taught my dad how to catch sheepshead this past Sunday. I wanted to take my boat, but he insisted on taking his since we were going “offshore” (to R8).

We left Shem Creek around 2:30pm. It was so smooth… I wish we had taken his boat offshore offshore…

I caught my first sheepshead before dad had his line in the water (my rods were rigged and ready to go, while he rigged his at Capers). This turned out to be a good thing so he could get the net.

Dad is learning the art of catch and release.

No, dad, we’re not keeping that fish.

Dad insisted on keeping a few despite my efforts. Now I’m glad he did as I enjoyed beer battered fried fish tacos last night

Brought 4 sheepshead home (2 caught by dad & 2 caught by yours truly), 12 sheepshead released, & 17 black sea bass released (one of which was a giant). Lost one giant - broke 10’ braid when diving down. It’s time for me to respool my reels…

Great day, I asked 4 people to go to Capers since I knew it would nice and no one wold go since they said it would be ‘rough’. COngrats on those keepers and thanks for letting some little ones go!

Chas’n born, Chas’n raised!

Lots of keepers on that boat

Nice convict catch. I was going to go Sunday but the power wire for my GPS/depth finder developed a short in it so I had to cancel the trip. Glad to see someone got into them even though it makes me jealous!

If you can’t find someone to go fishing because it is ‘rough’, give me a buzz. I have the same problem… this is another reason dad insisted on taking his 28’ grady (my 17’ scout would have been perfect!).

NICE catch. I have always wanted to catch sheeps on the reef. I love those fish. Any suggestions on where to fish, what to use, and tide when reef fishing? I need to get out there in the next few weeks.

thanks

In my opinion - it does not matter what tide you fish offshore. It’s all about anchoring at the edge of structure (which is easiest to do on a slack tide). I want to have the front half of the boat on top of structure and the back half of the boat off of it.

There’s a bunch of good structures out there - my fav being the tug boat (but it’s also more difficult to anchor in the right position).

I chum & use fiddler crabs for bait.

Nice report!! I am thinking of heading down this weekend. I’ve been to capers before and ran out from the jetties. Do you know if it’s possible to run out between iop/dewees or capers inlet??

I usually run out Dewees inlet. Hug the beach on your way out or you may get stuck.
