Shem Creek

Fished from the kayak yesterday in Shem Creek from 9:30am till 2:45 pm and was skunked. I had one bite and pulled to soon. I was about 2 hours after dead low until 1 hour after high. Any suggestions on what I could do to improve my luck? The great news was #1 I was on the water #2 I was away from work. Remember I’m learning inshore fishing from the start.

what kind of bait did you use?

vu du shrimp ghost and gold color under a popping cork, top water plug and something I call broken back minnow that I’ve used before and caught trout

try shrimp or minnows live

A tad early for top water and suspending baits. Slow crawling a soft plastic and jig head is a good option this time of year. My favorite, of recent, is the 1/8 oz trout eye and Zman trick shot. Zman also makes a larger slim swimz that I think is going to be a great all around bait, but I’ve only had a chance to use it once. Water is warming up quick but the fish can still be finicky this time of year.

Coastal, mud minnows are pretty tough and will last you a few days in cooler weather. If you are pulling soft plastics this time of year pull them SLOW…now slow down a little more.
Good luck.

Hey Coastal- keep at it- Try fishing the falling tide through dead low and the first part of incoming. It’s the best time to scout as well for structure. Try creek mouths, oyster beds, and points with soft plastics slow. Good Luck!
