Shenendoah Smallmouth 11/8/08

I’m on vacation so I am finally having some time to post some reports from the last couple of weekends. Smallmouth season is pretty much over unless you go out late in the day when it warms up. On Saturday 11/8 I paddled about 5 miles down the Shenendoah River just west of Charlottesville VA. It was a pretty slow day but I did hook into this nice smallie w/ a yellow CK baitfish. There was a bad fish kill the past 2 years on the Shenendoah. But, this year the river made a huge comeback! I had some 30 fish days with the flyrod and 60+ fish days w/ the spinning rod. If anyone is looking for a fun summer trip I would highly recommend coming up and giving it a shot. You can rent Canoes and Kayaks in the area and you can camp or find a pretty cheap hotel in the area. Two brothers own a great flyshop in Harrisonburg VA: www.mossycreekflyfishing.com Brian and Colby are awesome and they are two of the best guides I’ve fish with in the area.

The last 3 pics are from the James river. Here you can go to Charlottesville VA and a company: James River Runners will take you 6, or 12 miles up river and drop you off w/ your own Kayak or you can rent a canoe or Kayak from them for about $30. They also have camp grounds going down the river.

Very nice… my mom fishes the James river for smallies quite a bit right there in Richmond. I’ve been meaning to take a long rod up there and give them a shot.

Pillage and plunder with a 9wt and a fist full of clousers.

You should! May-September! August and Sept is the best…thats when the smallies start hitting the top water popper flys!
