Fished portions of the Folly yesterday with my favorite fishing partner, my niece. Caught a 16" spot-tail early on and then nothing for a couple of hours. On the way back to the landing, I decided we’d try for some sheeps with the fiddlers I’d bought for Saturday’s nearshore/offshore trip. Get the boat positioned, give her some reminders on how to position her line (in relation to the pilings), how to “feel” the bite and so on. As I’m getting ready to drop a line, her reel starts singing, and she says “I got one!, I got one!”. She keeps the rod tip up, the line tight, and gets the fish away from the pilings. I see first color and can barely believe what I think I see: it looks like the biggest sheep I’ve ever seen in person. I try to conceal my excitement/panic for her sake and she successfully gets the fish to the side of the boat, where I realize my initial assessment is confirmed. In my excitement it dawns on me I don’t have a net, so I grab the bait net, put it around the fish’s snout, and catapult it into the boat. Mission accomplished:
Took the fish to a tackle shop to be weighed, and was surprised to learn of it’s true weight. Before I divulge, any estimates on the weight? I’m asking before I say for a very specific reason.
All in all, great day with one of my favorite people in al the world. Once again, thank the good Lord for the Lowcountry!

I guess I should narrow down my guess…6.5#, but wouldn’t surprise me if was larger. Again, sweet fish…she’ll remember that for a long time…good work uncle!
I appreciate the kind replies and your estimates. Much to my dismay, the fish weighed 6.35 lbs. according to the local tackle shop’s scales. I called bull$h!+,as I figured user error on behalf of the kid operating the scale, but maybe not.
A couple of years ago I got to fish with Saltfisher, who’s as good as there is at catching convicts. He pulled in a fish he estimated to be around 9#, and this fish was easily bigger than that one. Not one to complain, as the niece was happy just to catch a fish, but a 10+ lb. sheep is a lifetime fish. I’ll end my rant now. Just sayin…
