Shift Shaft release on 2005 Johnson 90hp -Anyone??

It is time to change the water pump on my 2005 Johnson 90hp 2-stroke. I have changed several water pumps, (Merc 150, Johnson 88 Spl, Mercruiser Alpha II, Merc 50), but I have not changed the pump on this style Johnson. My question is on the release for the shift shaft, I believe it is the pin clip in the first picture between the two lower carbs, but it also looks like it could be the screw on the fitting in the second pic. Anyone know the correct procedure for releasing the shift shaft on this motor? Usually it should be in a certain gear position etc.

Thanks

Pursuitgang, sorry i cant help you on your engine question, but i do have a question i hope you can answer. I have the same engine as you and have had nothing but trouble with it. I have spent $1,500 in two years trying to get it fixed. Do you know of a good Johnson mechanics in the the area ?

Thanks,
Dave

I can’t see your pics here at work but if I’m correct, there should be a pin that you pull out and the shift shaft just slides outboard. Its really hard to see where it connects to the shaft. Just make sure that you have it in neutral. Don’t mess with the screw. if it comes out its a beast to get back in! (Personal experience there.)

also…the pin style clip should be in the area to the right of the motor, near where the control cables connect up to the motor.

take the side panel off
pull the pin
push the shaft toward the other side
you dont have to remove the bolt

I’m now at www.teamcharlestonmarine.com

flounderchaser,

The only problem I have had and it was a repeat problem was the VRO pump died twice, fortunately it was replaced under warranty both times. As far as someone to work on it, I used Cape Romain Marine for the warranty work and I was happy with them, but they are a long drive. I believe Chris V, Charleston Marine works on Johnson, I would give him a try, seems like a stand up guy and is local. I have not had any work done by him, but plan on having him do the 100 hr service on my DF140s…
