shifting and throttle cables

the engine is a johnson 2003ish 4 stroke 140. The shifting has always been tight. dropped it in the water and it would only go in reverse. it was extremely hard to get into forward and when the shifter was moved to forward the engine would rev up but the gear wasnt all the way engaged it was making a ticking/ knocking sound like it does when its about to go into gear. adjusted the shifter cable at the engine. moved it forward, so the engine would go in forward…when i did that it would go in reverse. so i adjusted back some.then it would go in forward but jump in and out of reverse. should i keep adjusting it trying to find the right spot or is there a bigger problem like the gear box??? or should i try adjusting the throttle cables instead of the gear cable???

thats a suzuki motor, and the shift shaft gets corrosion and seizes up
not uncommon.

sounds extremely accurate. is there anything that can be done to solve the problem short of tearing down the whole engine??? i greased the fitting at the top end but it did hardly anything…

yes
the bushing can be removed and replaced
have to look at it, but sometimes the repair can be made without removing the powerhead, depending on the model. they made a change to the housing, and actually used a bearing

ok i think i have the shift shaft loosened up decently, now it seems that the cables arent totally engaging the gear, is that a sign or a bad cable???

ok well long story short i just played with the adjustment back and forth until i found the right spot. also wd40ed the hell out of the shaft and then oiled it and grabbed it with vise grips and shifted the gears about 100 times to loosen up the shaft. works like a champ now, beats the hell out of breakin the whole thing down, thanks for the advise chris!!!
