I bought this baitcasting reel probably 10 years ago. I’ve never been able to cast it very far. I use baitcasting reels all the time. I’ve removed all the brakes and tied on heavy baits but still not very good. Tried on different rods. Its still like brand new but before I chunk it, thought I’d try to get some ideas about what ius wrong. Is it just a junk reel?
I’m sure you have played with the cast control knob and the brakes since you are experienced with bait casters. if not make sure they are loose.
otherwise bearings probably need replacement given the age of the reel.
I’ve never heard of a Shimano Calata. Did you mean Calcutta?
You can print and fill out a form for repair on shimano’s web site. state your problem very briefly and send it to them. Hell they may send you a brand new reel.

It may be Shimano Catala instead of calata. Not a Calcutta.
