im looking into a larger reel for surf fishing, big reds, and big sharks, and hopefully tarpon. so the shimano tld 15 is probably what i need… but its expensive. it is like a hundred bucks for just the reel, and then you need power pro and a rod. i would just put whatever i get on a heavy action ugly stick. but i am looking at some other reels too like an okuma or something. i found an okuma when i looked for star drag reels but it says its good for efforless trolling but is it good for casting also? i have two penn trolling reels that i would use also so i need a big reel that cast far enough to be good surf fishing and be able to handle these big fish, along with my big dreams:smiley:. i will get the shimano if i have to, i would rather spend a hundred on something that will last thatn 40 or 50 on something that will last on one shark. and i would most likely rig it up with 50 or 75 yrds of 100lb mono for backing, jsut something for the braid to grip onto, and have the rest spooled up with 80lb power pro and fish a 100lb mono leader or big wire leader. also what size leader would you guys use? thanks

http://www.daiwa.com/Reel/detail.aspx?id=190 get the 30 or 40(if you get the 40 go with the lower gear ratio) back it with 30-40 yards of 30 lb. mono(75yards of 100lb. mono will take up a lot of valuable reel space). Spool it with 65lb. braid. Use a 80lb. casting leader made out of 10-20ft. of mono connected the the braid with an albright knot. Use a 100lb. mono leader or wire leader but make it very short, 2ft. at the max if you hook into a shark while tarpon fishing the heavy mono will help for abrasion resistance against the sharks tail. I would recommend the tld over the sealine but if you cant afford the tld get the sealine. If you do get the tld use the same method as mentioned above.

i did a quick search of that sealina and it is the same price as the TLD i found. i dont want to have to have to shell out the money for the TLD but i have too if one of those other brands arent as good or same price. stuckonland, dont you have a TLD? i know you do alot of surf fishing and does yours cast good and handle bull reds, and sharks? thanks

Hey Yakman, I have a few TLD 15’s at home. Might be interested in selling you one. I’ll take a look at them when I get home, and get back to you with a price.
Yakman, if money is a issue look to something for more of a off the shelf reel. There are plenty of open face and congenital reels out there that can handle what you want to do. I use a Abu Garcia Ambassadeur 6000 and have pulled in plenty of big reds with it. I just picked up a Penn FRC6000 Fierce for under $70.00 that will do what you want. Holds plenty of line and has the drag torque you will need and it will case a mile. Good luck on your search.
A wise man once said “Do as I say not as I do” Good advice when I tell you that.
heck, it ain’t great but when I was a poor high school kid I had a Penn 209 that caught reds up to 50" and a 7 ft bull shark on the tx coast. They’re cheap, last forever, but don’t have a ton of drag and are not easy to cast. But it can be done!

id be interested in them. my problem with the other reels is that i cant really tell if they are castable or just trolling, i have two 1980's penn senators at home that im going to use fodr dropping and trolling but i want something to cast in the surf and cast from the boat. i am getting a spinning surf combo also so the tld wouldnt be my main setup. im trying to save up to get about 4 setups to fish with. i have 2 cheap ones now and my main reel broke..
