I will be doing the “Locks” trip next weekend and staying downtown on the water in downtown Charleston. The plan is to hit the 60 Saturday weather permitting. I was looking on my Navionics app and noticed that the main shipping channel appears to run almost 15 miles out of the harbor. My app reads “Danger Area” to the south of the main channel and I am not sure why it says that as the depths appear to be fine. Does that warning just apply to large ships that draft deep? Would I be ok to leave the main channel once I get a few miles past the breakers? Staying in the channel until it ends then turning south would add an extra 5 or 6 miles that could be avoided if I can safely leave the markers. Thanks for your help

Thanks for the info.
We are coming down next weekend (5/15-5/17) but I will certainly not be attempting anything if there are 4ft seas.
Any speculation on what could be caught out there in mid May?

Many of those “danger areas” are a reminder of the extinct US Navy base. Many are un-exploded ordinance. The notes on your chart will tell you .

No worries. . I am just glad we didn’t plan the trip a week earlier. Hopefully that low pressure system will be long gone by next weekend. If anyone is planning to head to the 60 on 5/16 and wants a buddy boat shoot me a pm.

Once you clear the rocks you are fine. There’s no reason to run the channel in the harbor. You can run just outside bouy line & there’s plenty of water.

I always round the last channel marker after the rocks end just to be safe. I run south a lot to the 4K and anglers reef, usually 20-40’ of water, nothing to worry about. Natureboy is correct, a lot of old stuff on the bottom, i wouldn’t anchor in those areas, not that there is really a reason to.

Thanks for the info. I have spent a lot of time in Charleston but no time on the water. How many boats should I expect to see at the 60 on a Saturday in Mid may assuming decent conditions?

LOTS of boats at the 60 on any nice day. Get there early!
On the 60, this is prime season for spadefish as well with an occasional cobia.
