Last weekend I was fishing in a creek behind Sullivans Island and I saw dozens of skeet clays lining the edge of the marsh. I was wondering if anyone knew (or knew where I could find) the laws and regulations regarding the legality of where you could discharge a firearm. I have heard people say things like 500 feet away from any domicile or road, but even after search for HOURS online, I have not been able to find and hard facts to make sure I would be in the clear. I know people duck hunt in Copahee as well as behind Morris Island. Any information is helpful!
Were you near Goldbug Island? They do some shooting although I thought it was only turkey shoots at paper targets. They may do a small amount of clay shooting. I did hear shooting from near there this past Sunday.
The town of Sullivan’s Island owns most of the marsh between the island and the ICW so I wouldn’t try it there.
As far as I know, there are distance laws on some of the lakes and there is the 300 yard deer hunting limit but no other explicit laws other than negligence with a firearm stuff. You can’t hunt birds south of the Ben Sawyer but hunting is allowed north of it. Don’t get out on the spoilage islands because they are privately owned.
Be discreet, shoot and trap from the boat and don’t do stupid stuff and you’ll probably be OK.
You might want to check SCDNR regs. I believe you have to use steel, or non-toxic shot, when shooting over water?
…Politicians aren’t the “Oldest Profession”, but the results are still the same!!!
You are only required to use steel shot when hunting waterfowl…
No problem, I have a good friend who lives on Lake Greenwood, and was instructed by a SCDNR Game Warden that he would fine them if he caught them shooting clays off of the dock with lead shot again.

Lead shot is illegal during waterfoel hunts.
But you DO NOT have to shoot steel if shooting clays over water. Asked an officer teaching the hunter ed course today! Although lead is much more harmful to the animals
DNR Enviormental regulations do not allow skeet shooting (clay birds) to be. .shot ovdr saltwater marsh. You can call the EPA Office to obtain that regulation
