I have taken a lot of guys fishing for reds.I have seen what most think is a Carolina rig.My Carolina rig is 1/2oz barrel weight, swivel and a circle hook tied on 6 yes 6 inches of 20 pound leader.Works great and easy to cast.I had a guy out that had 4 feet of leader.Bait was flying all over the boat on a cast.I corrected that real fast.Short leaders work best and get hung up less.
I run a hook direct on the end of 30 pound braid, with one or more split shot 15" above it. Reds donāt care.

I generally run 12-18" floro leader. Long enough that I can cast easily, and still change out the terminal tackle a few times. A couple split shots above that. Like JI said, reds donāt care.

stonoman, has some experience, I would be willing to try his way, always willing to try something once

goes home through the alley.

6-12" leader is all you needā¦for reds we like 40 lb. test flourcarbonā¦anything longer makes casting tough and I do agree that the āreds donāt careā as mentioned above. You can cast better and feel the bait better and will get hung up less. Also, if using a heavy weight (over 1/4 oz.) put a bead between the lead and the swivel on the leader. It makes a little noise and protects the knot. Also, if using a lead head jig, tie it to the leader with a loop knot to improve the action. Iāve used a snap swivel at times to attach the jig and that didnāt seeem to matter to the fish either. You pick up less grass without the snap swivel though so I use a loop knot most of the time.

Carbon leader is expensive and not needed for reds.I do use carbon on trout.

The same. I like to be able to retie a few times. I use good mono for all inshore leaders. Works for me.

I use about a foot of flouro and almost never get broken off, even when they wrap it around the piling. I usually just wait for the fish to unravel itself, and bam, back in business. Of course after dock fishing all day I need to retire that leader.

I like mono. I use ande 20 or 40 depending on the situation. Its tough line and very inexpensive. I have tried flouro and just dont like it for some reason. I dont like tying right to the braid. Oysters and barnacles will cut tight braid with just one small nick.
