Short vs. Long Shaft

I have a Skiff I am re powering. The transom is 16.5 inches. Old motor was 20 inch shaft. That extra 1.5 inches will make a short shaft too high won’t it. I suppose I could do a 20 inch with a jack plate. Thoughts? What are your favorite 25hp outboards? I have heard good things about Evinrude E-Tecs.

A 20" shaft would be too long for that without an adjustable jack plate. A 15 might work OK. Different brands have different leg lengths, short shaft doesn’t necessarily mean exactly 15". Measure them.

How long is the skiff and does it have a flat bottom or V hull? Flat bottom boats usually like the A/V plate an inch or so above the bottom.

My favorite brand is Yamaha. Next is Merc. If you gave me a new Etec I’d sell it and buy one of the above

Thanks for the response! It is a Carolina skiff j14. Flat bottom. Sounds like short shaft will work from what you are saying. Old motor was 20 inches by my measurement.
