Should I be leery of a 03 VMAX 175 HPDI 102 hours?

Looking at an 2003 boat that has a 2003 175 Yamaha VMAX HPDI. I remember them having some issues when they first came out. Anything I need to look out for? Thanks for any help!

Have a certified mech check it out before you buy. Chris V is an excellent source for this type of work.

…because everything is a conspiracy!!!

I would normally take it to Chris, but the boat is in Florida.

Check compression on all cylinders and call Chris with the engine serial number. He can check with yamaha to see what updates/issues there have been with the motor. Definately recommend hooking up to a computer to see what kind of abuse it’s had, but it likely hasn’t been much with those low hours.

Maintenance on the HPDI’s is very important. Need to keep the high pressure filter and other fuel system components changed out yearly. They are very sensitive to trashy fuel…

There was an update Yamaha did on the 2000 and 2001’s that changed the computer, coils, and spark plug type to use less oil and have less fouling. I think the issues were resolved by 2003. My 2001 still has the original computer and plug type, and I haven’t seen problems with it.

I have a 2001 model 200HP HPDI with over 800 hrs, and know several others with 200HP ones with similar age and hours. I wouldn’t hesitate to go with an 03 with only 100hrs. They are very efficient and reliable as long as they’re kept up with. The 250 and 300HP HPDI’s were the ones with serious issues and to be avoided from what I understand.
