Should I buy this trailer...?

It is for a 19’ Carolina Skiff. I know, tandem axles are a bit overkill, but it’s a good deal…

For a 19’ carolina skiff?? yeah id get it. my buddy has that same boat and he wishes he had a tandem axel tralier for it. just make sure that you set it up right so it pulls good.

Tandem is always better in my opinion; pulls better, safer, won’t get stranded as easily. Has a lot of age on it, so as Shocker said, make sure it is roadworthy, and dependable before pulling it…

Somewhat related question:

Is there a rule of thumb on when to replace rusted trailer parts. Specifically axle, leaf springs, bunk brackets, wench.

Double check the axle, bearings and springs, tires, winch and any major rust. Rust = Bad Things and $$

the frame looks to be in decent shape. like mac daddy said check everything replace whatever needs to be fixed BEFORE you put the boat on it. trust me. its a lot easier to work on without a boat on it.

Thanks for the replies. Axles, springs, and hubs are all in good shape. I will let you know how she pulls. What’s the best place to get carpet for the bunks?

Check out the new thread on this forum about leaf springs, good info there on trailers…

Go to Lowes for teh carpet.

I would add some sturdy guide poles on the trailer. Would make keeping the boat straight on the trailer when you pull out of the water a lot easier.

What’s up with the little tires? Make sure they have the load rating to support the boat. Little tires are also hell on bearings. If your going 70, it’s like doing 140 with those donuts.

Hard to tell from picture, but tilt latch and safety chain look very rusty. Make sure its not going to tilt at an unwanted time.

Thanks for the suggestions. I did buy the trailer and am looking around for some larger tires. That is the first thing I noticed about the trailer. Guide poles/bunks are also a necessity due to the flat bottom on my boat. Anyone know of a good place to get them, or a good way to make them myself? I bought carpet at Home Depot for about $6/ft. I have plenty left over for other projects. Also, the tilt latch is fine. I swapped the safety chains off my old trailer to this one. In the end, I got a great deal for minimal work to be done!

Nacho – they sell the guide kits at Bass Pro; but I’m sure that’s a ways out for you.

Skip the carpet and put bunk slicks on it. It will make loading and unloading so much easier.

I say no, the rims painted, no carpet on the bumpers, showing rust, how does the axels look, are they rusty, is your skiff a single hule flat bottom? If so, the weight if not that heavy to warrant a tandem, yes more reliable but at what cost is it going to take to get the seals replaced, new rims and you might as well get new tires because they don’t cost much more for the rim and tire. Cable or strap?? How are the lights? These days it is alot to replace these items and no guide on’s. Do the seals have spin doe seals? You could be spending 400 to 700 in just repairs. Nothing is worst than being stuck. Extra tire? Your taking a chance,
